Despite record-setting 2014 passenger traffic numbers, Denver International Airport is no longer in the top five of the nation’s busiest airports for passenger boardings, according to federal data released Wednesday.

DIA, which in 2013 was ranked the fifth busiest in the U.S., logged a 2 percent increase in the number of passengers who boarded or connected to another flight in Denver in 2014 — to slightly more than 26 million. But it wasn’t enough to hold off John F. Kennedy International in New York, which saw 2014 enplanements bump up about 4.8 percent to about 26.2 million.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield International remains the nation’s busiest airport, with more than 46.6 million passengers boarding, followed by Los Angeles International, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth and JFK. DIA ranks No. 6, followed by the San Francisco, Charlotte, N.C., Las Vegas and Phoenix airports.

DIA remains the fifth overall busiest airport, according to data compiled by the Airports Council International.
