Sales of light trucks increased 16.1 percent in the first eight months of 2015 compared with the same period last year, according to the Colorado Auto Dealers Association. Sales of passenger cars declined 0.6 percent over the same period.

“It appears as though affordable fuel prices and available credit for most buyers have been the major factors spurring new vehicle registrations in August, and especially for pickups and SUVs,” CADA chief Tim Jackson said in a news release Thursday. “Consumers are feeling more confident and they’re also taking advantage of appealing incentives from manufacturers and dealers.”

The trade group’s monthly report showed total new car and light truck registrations were up 9.6 percent for the period and up 11.8 percent over last August.

There were 130,624 new vehicles registered during the eight-month period and 123,021 used cars and trucks (those seven years old or newer), up 6.6 percent from last year.

Jackson said Chrysler, Lincoln, Porsche, Buick and GMC new vehicle registrations increased by more than 20 percent so far this year.

Meanwhile, compact SUVs, compact pickups, compact luxury SUVs, full-size pickups and full size crossover SUVs led in market share gains for the period.
