Young macintyre makes first catch count for a td

BOULDER — Redshirt freshman Jay MacIntyre made the most of his first pass reception for Colorado, turning it into a 38-yard touchdown Saturday by eluding defenders with some nifty moves after the catch.

MacIntyre is coach Mike Mac Intyre’s older son and was a Denver Post All-Colorado selection at Monarch High School.

“The feeling was amazing, one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever had,” Jay MacIntyre said. “I’ve always looked up to players that my dad coached, and to be one now, I wanted that first reception. When I scored, it was just an exhilarating feeling for me.

“The win is the biggest thing. I just want to win games, and that’s why I’m here, to help my dad win games.”

MacIntyre also had a 31-yard punt return. Nelson Spruce, who set another pass receiving record in the game, is CU’s usual punt returner, but MacIntyre figures to get more chances there.

“We’ll put him back there some on punt returns,” Mike MacIntyre said. “Spruce is so good, but I think Jay will have a chance to do that some more. That also takes some hits off Spruce.”

More hits for Jay, though, Dad.

Two picks for Bell. Safety Jered Bell, a sixth-year senior who suffered ACL tears in 2011 and 2014, had two interceptions.

“Oh, man, it’s a great feeling,” Bell said. “I just give God the glory for letting me go out there and make some plays for the team. Coach (Jim) Leavitt (defensive coordinator) preaches that we need takeaways in order to go where we want to go, so that’s one thing we stress in practice every day.”

Mike MacIntyre was thrilled for him.

“It was awesome,” MacIntyre said. “When you have both your ACLs torn, as a coach you don’t push them, you just let him go. He’ll play more and more as the year goes along. Really happy for Jered.”

Quick hits. Sefo Liufau’s scoring throw to MacIntyre was his 44th touchdown pass, tying him for second in school history with Joel Klatt. They trail Cody Hawkins (60). … CU didn’t lose yardage until the game’s last two plays, which were kneel-downs. … The 48-point margin of victory was the most since 1995 (52 points vs. Northeast Louisiana. … If CU beats Oregon next week, it would be its first four-game winning streak since 2002.
