The leaves are turning golden along the Front Range, but jackets are likely to remain packed away as temperatures are on track to make this the warmest September on record in Denver.
The average temperature for Denver this month as of Saturday morning clocks in at 69.6 degrees, said Frank Cooper of the National Weather Service in Boulder.
That beats the record set in 1948 by 1.3 degrees, Cooper said, adding that the rest of the month is likely to follow suit with warm temperatures.
“Very warm afternoon temperatures are going to keep that average pretty high,” he said.
The September 2014 average temperature was 64.8 degrees, which Cooper said was still above the normal average monthly temperature of 63.4 degrees.
In addition to noteworthy balmy temperatures, Cooper said that this month is looking to be one of the driest September’s on record.
With .04 inches of precipitation, he said that this month is a contender for the seventh driest September on record in Denver.
Precipitation isn’t likely until the middle of next week, so September is likely to end unusually dry and warm.
is expected to turn this unconventional weather around, Cooper said.
“We should start to see some moisture and a couple of decent snow storms in the fall,” Cooper said. “Hopefully, toward October, we’ll start to see this pattern shift a bit.”
At least for the next several days, though, temperatures are expected to remain high above average.
The high temperature was 87 degrees on Saturday and an even warmer high of 89 degrees is predicted for Sunday.
“That’s way above normal,” Cooper said. “That’s almost 18 degrees or so above the norm.”
