The Rockies’ slide back to last place in the National League West caused a slip at the gates. Colorado took a slight hit in attendance this season.
The Rockies averaged 30,948 paying customers this season after Sunday’s Coors Field finale, a 12-5 victory over the Dodgers in front of 32,870.
Colorado drew 2,506,789 total fans in 2015 — their per-game average ranks 14th in baseball, eighth in the NL.
“As long as there are fans in the stands, we have to play for them,” Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez said. “They pay for a ticket to watch a professional baseball team. I don’t take it easy because I know there are kids watching me.”
Major League Baseball attendance is up overall, averaging about 1,000 more fans per game this season.
But the Rockies’ season total is their lowest since 2007. They last ranked as low as eighth in NL attendance in 2009.
“You have to play hard if you’re in last place or first place,” Gonzalez said. “You have to play hard until the last out and the season is over.”
