Martin Winterkorn, former chairman of the board of the Volkswagen group, during the annual press conference in Wolfsburg, northern Germany on March 12, 2009. (Joerg Sarbach, Associated Press file)

I was flummoxed to learn that Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen, was unaware of what was going on in his company. Judging by the size of CEO salaries and their golden parachutes — Winterkorn’s is estimated at $66.9 million — I had always assumed these people were omniscient. If they aren’t, how can such obscene salaries be justified?

It is now obvious that these people are criminally overpaid and grossly undertaxed. Who do they think they are, football coaches?
