All students have been accounted for at Cesar Chavez Academy in the West Highland neighborhood, but Denver police are continuing to investigate a report of a possible abduction.

Elementary-aged students at the school, at 3752 Tennyson St., reported they saw, through a fence, a girl being abducted Thursday afternoon, said school board member Myranda Marsh. School officials alerted police out of caution.

Four students, according to a Denver Public Schools release, said they saw a girl, about 9 or 10 years old, being forced into a van.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said that although no children were missing at the academy or nearby schools, police were taking the report seriously.

Denver police had nearby schools conduct head counts, students at those schools were also all accounted for, DPS said.

Ken Apodaca’s 7th-grade daughter normally makes the trek home on foot, but she called him to come pick her up after school officials forbade students from walking home.

“It’s good that they’re watching out for the little ones,” he said, adding that parents have been given little information about the incident.

Police remained on scene and patrolling the neighborhood as of early evening.

“We are always telling our children if they see something, say something,” Jackson said, adding that the children’s claims should not be discounted because of their age.
