A 70-year-old man was cut and bruised by flying bricks early Monday after a car “flew” over his front yard and collided with the brick wall of his bedroom, launching him and his bed across the room.
“It sounded and felt like a bomb going off,” said Gwen Turner, 40, who was in a bedroom next to the room where a car broke through a brick wall just before 4 a.m.
“It felt like we were under attack.”
Gwen Turner’s 70-year-old father, Clifford, was treated for cuts and bruises to his face. He underwent diagnostic testing to make sure he didn’t have a serious head injury, Gwen Turner said.
The driver, Gunner Bolstad, 20, has been arrested on several criminal charges including third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, drunken driving and careless driving causing injury, said Sgt. Lori Bronner, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Bail was set at $1,750.
Bolstad apparently was speeding when he swerved around a corner on the 5200 block of Nashua Circle, careened off the pavement, hit a berm and went airborne, Bronner said.
The car struck a tree in midair before crashing into a brick wall of the room where Clifford Turner and his 13-year-old grandson were sleeping.
Gwen Turner said her mother and two sons also were in the house when they were jarred awake by the collision. The house was dark until she got to the hallway.
“It sounded like furniture kept falling, falling, falling. When I looked into the bedroom all I saw were headlights,” she said. There was dust everywhere, she said.
Gwen Turner said she went outside as three men were climbing out of the car. She said the driver apologized, but she made sure he didn’t leave.
Clifford Turner and Bolstad were taken in ambulances to separate hospitals for treatment, she said. Clifford Turner was treated and released and is recuperating at home.
