Both the Sandy Hook and Umpqua Community College shooters had mothers who knew they had mental health issues and still gave their sons access to guns — even going to shooting ranges with them. The father of the Umpqua shooter also blames it on guns, not willing to take responsibility for his failure as a parent.
My daughter attends Umpqua Community College, but was fortunately not on campus that day.
Easy access to guns, while it facilitates these killings, isn’t the problem — mental health is. The South Carolina church killings could just as easily have been done with a 5-gallon can of gasoline and a book of matches.
