Getting your player ready...

Denver’s interim sheriff, in his scandal-wracked department. That’s good to know, if true.

But then why would he console a fired former sheriff’s chief with the claim that “they have a trophy they can hang on their wall. That’s all they care about”?

Diggins has now apologized for his comment, which was recorded without his knowledge. But the fact that he made it at all speaks to the inbred culture within the agency that recent reforms are supposed to uproot. The chief is not supposed to be commiserating with employees fired for misconduct and blaming outsiders — “they” — for meddling in departmental affairs.

We hate to sound like a broken record on this topic, but Diggins’ remarks do highlight — again — why full reform of the agency requires a fresh face at the top.

From outside the agency.
