Interview with Julie DuShane, spa director

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: In 2004, I experienced the miracle of the laser system firsthand. My laser treatment was life changing for me and felt amazingly liberating. I was so impressed that I trained to be a certified laser technician that same year, and Colorado Medical Spa was born. That was a decade ago. Since the beginning, my practice has continued to evolve. We now offer full laser treatments, hair removal, sun damage and vein mitigation, laser facial and laser skin tightening. I use and market a medical-grade skin-care line; chemical peels, resurfacing treatments and an at-home skin-care line. With my arsenal of tools, clients see amazing results.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: I just love it when my clients, especially those who walk in believing they have a condition that can’t be changed, are astounded by the results. I personally meet with every client for a complementary consultation to discuss their concerns and the options we have available. I consider everything they tell me when creating a custom package. Each package is completely individualized. The results are designed to meet the needs of my client. As we work together, I do not hand a client off to other technicians as many spas will do. I perform every treatment with the same level of care and attention throughout the entire process. This is not typical in the industry.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: What I like best about my work is that it’s not work at all for me. I have created a warm, comfortable, professional environment that elicits positive comments from everyone as they walk through the door. When I come to work in the morning, it’s like coming to a second home where I will welcome wonderful people throughout the day and I get to take care of them. I also love our great community of clients and many choose to socialize at spa events in our delightful Olde Town Arvada location.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: It’s hard to compete against the bigger chains with regard to marketing and promotional dollars. Colorado Medical Spa’s prices are far less and my customer care far exceeds the chains. Most clients find us by word of mouth, which is great, but we are focused on growing awareness of our services.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: We offer the same services that are available in Cherry Creek for hundreds to thousands of dollars less. We also serve a number of teens who are experiencing the joys of puberty and are struggling to feel good about themselves due to their skin conditions. My goal is to help all who walk through my door look and feel better about themselves.
