Police in Wheat Ridge are looking for a man who walked away from his caregiver on Wednesday.

George Melvin, 64, has the mental capability of about a 7-year-old, according to a Wheat Ridge Police Department media release.

Melvin was on a group outing in the area of West 38th Avenue and Chase Street when he walked off. He was last seen heading walking east on West 38th Avenue at Ames Street.

Police describe Melvin as about 5-feet 9-inches tall, 160 pounds with gray hair and blue eyes. He is clean shaven and was wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans. He was also wearing a identification card hanging from a lanyard around his neck.

Melvin is verbal and can answer questions, but he is not familiar with the area. He likes coffee shops and diners but has no money. He is known to walk on highways and may not recognize the danger associated with the act, according to police.

Anyone who sees Melvin, or knows his whereabouts, is asked to call police at 303 237-2220.
