Re: “Address root causes of abortion,” Oct. 12 letter to the editor.

Letter-writer Dr. Thomas J. Perille should realize that he is far outside the mainstream of the pro-life movement. By suggesting programs that would actually assist women in avoiding pregnancy and support women who become pregnant and opt to have their child, he is showing a level of compassion for the reality of women’s lives that is distinctly missing from the pro-life movement. The people who are so diametrically opposed to abortions also seem equally opposed to affordable, reliable contraception and programs that support children and their families — the very things that could reduce the need for abortion. So until Dr. Perille can persuade his fellow travelers to devote more energy to implementing his suggested programs than to opposing abortion, it is unlikely that women will find the support they need to choose abortion less often.
