A New Mexico man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempted assault in a March near Vail.

A judge sentenced Jose Manuel Serrano-Lerma, 30, on Wednesday, the 5th Judicial District attorney’s office said Thursday. He pleaded guilty in August to two counts of attempted first-degree assault and illegal discharge of a firearm.

Serrano-Lerma and accomplice Chelsey Jacobs, 21, were eastbound on Interstate 70 on March 31 when they encountered another vehicle in Glenwood Canyon “in an aggressive driving incident,” prosecutors said.

The cars were in conflict for about 50 miles when Serrano-Lerma shot at the other vehicle near East Vail.

Further investigation revealed that the car Serrano-Lerma was driving had been carjacked in Albuquerque less than a week earlier, prosecutors said.
