An Aurora gang member has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for gun and drug charges, federal prosecutors said Friday.

Michael Eugene Simpson, 35, of 13 counts, including possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a destructive device and and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

Simpson was sentenced on Oct. 9, said a news release by U.S. Attorney John Walsh and Ken Croke, special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The Aurora Police Department received information in June 2014 that Simpson was in possession of firearms and drugs, the release said.

When officers responded to Simpson’s home, they found him in a car in his driveway, and he tried to flee, the release said. A law enforcement vehicle was blocking his escape, so he backed into the vehicle multiple times until police broke his car window and used a stun gun on him.

Agents and officers who conducted the search of his home found loaded firearms, cocaine, more than 100 rounds of ammunition, a digital scale, a beaker and “plastic bags used to distribute cocaine.”

Simpson, a member of the 83 Gangster Crips, has previous drug-related felony convictions, the release said.

“A small number of criminals account for a large part of the crime problem, and this case is a perfect example,” Walsh said in the release.
