Denver prosecutors have formally charged a young father accused of shaking and seriously injuring his 3-month-old twins.

Thamien Vasquez, 20, was charged with two counts of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, the Denver district attorney’s office said Friday.

Police say they discovered the abuse after the two babies were admitted to Children’s Hospital Colorado with brain bleeds and other injuries, according to a probable cause affidavit.

A doctor told investigators the children have “substantial risk of serious, permanent disfigurement.”

“Vasquez admitted to shaking the children when they were about 1 month old,” the affidavit says. “He states he shook them while he was playing with them.”

The charges allege Vasquez shook his children between Oct. 10 and Oct. 12.

Vasquez remains jailed at the Denver Detention Center on $50,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 20.
