COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Officials are unsure if radioactive shells were left at Fort Carson following training on how soldiers could use a nuclear-tipped bazooka in the 1960s.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reports (http://tinyurl.com/qbyx9qx ) the possibility that nuclear waste was stored at the base was disclosed in an application by the Army for a Nuclear Regulatory Commission permit to leave uranium buried on the post.
The nuclear-tipped bazookas called the Davy Crockett were never fired in combat.
The Army says more than 12,000 acres may have been contaminated, including training areas at Fort Carson, Hawaii, Washington state, Georgia, Kentucky, Kansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina and California.
