DALLAS — Floodwaters from daylong heavy rain wreaked havoc on traffic on many major Texas roads and highways on Friday.

Floodwaters from more than 13 inches of rain closed Interstate 45 near Corsicana, 50 miles south of Dallas, backing up traffic for 12 miles and prompting emergency responders to begin relief efforts, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Officials were working in the rain and the dark Friday night to help get the stalled traffic off the flooded highway to safety.

Texas was contending with multiple storm systems, prompting emergency officials to gear up for heavy rains through the weekend and widespread flooding that may follow. In South Texas, emergency workers are concerned the current system will be followed by the wet remnants of powerful Hurricane Patricia, which made landfall Friday evening in Mexico.
