Colorado Springs police arrested a 29-year-old man Monday night after authorities say he punched an officer several times in the face at a Salvation Army warming shelter.

Mikayahu Del Castillo is being held at the El Paso County jail on suspicion of several charges, including second-degree assault on a peace officer.

Police were called to the shelter about 7:30 p.m. on reports Del Castillo had punched a security guard.

“Without warning, (Del Castillo) stood up and attacked the officer, throwing punches to the officer’s face,” police said in a news release. “The officer fought back and was assisted by security personnel.”

The officer sustained minor injuries.
