A husband and wife have been indicted for their roles in a fatal car collision, officials said on Tuesday.
Andrew Huerena, 36, and Alisha Huerena, 35, were both indicted after a July traffic collision that killed 51-year-old Kimberly Henderson and seriously injured a child passenger, according to a Jefferson and Gilpin Counties District Attorney news release.
Andrew Huerena was driving the vehicle eastbound with Alisha Huerena in the passenger seat on West 6th Avenue between Indiana Avenue and Union Boulevard, the release said. He was seen going at least 65 miles per hour and darting past other vehicles.
The husband and wife were arguing when she grabbed the steering wheel and caused the vehicle to go into other lanes of traffic, causing the crash with Henderson, the release said.
There was a protection order in place at the time of the crash that prohibited Andrew Huerena from having contact with his wife.
The Huerenas did not have insurance at the time of the crash.
The couple told Lakewood police that Alisha Huerena had reached over to tune the radio when the vehicle hit a bump, causing her to hit the steering wheel.
Alisha Huerena was indicted on charges manslaughter, child abuse with serious bodily injury and failure to have compulsory insurance. Andrew Huerena was indicted on accessory to manslaughter, failure to have compulsory insurance and violation of a protection order.
Warrants were issued for the Huerenas on Oct. 20. Bond has been set in the amount of $10,000 for Alisha Huerena and $7,500 for Andrew Huerena.
