Re: “Keep wine and full-strength beer out of Colorado grocery stores,” Oct. 24 letter to the editor.

In his opposition to changing our liquor laws, letter-writer Michael Mazenko states that this change will decrease choice for Colorado shoppers. He worries that the changes will mean fewer independent liquor stores. He ignores the fact that adding hundreds of grocers and other beer and wine retailers means that I get more choices of where to buy beer and wine. Let the free market dictate who stays in business, not the all-powerful liquor store owners’ lobby, which every year bullies our state representatives into killing freedom of choice for all of Colorado’s residents. Let the voters, not a political lobby, choose if King Soopers or Safeway can sell wine.

Another frequently ignored fact of the Colorado liquor landscape is that often one family will own several liquor stores, with different family members “owning” one store each. The current sham of a system needs to be brought into the real world. Let Colorado voters choose whether or not to do so.

Tom Mueller, Commerce City
