A motorcyclist died from injuries suffered in a crash Tuesday on an Interstate 25 exit near Colorado Springs.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper at about 9:50 a.m. was parked in the median of northbound I-25 when he clocked a southbound motorcycle at 101 mph, according to a state patrol media release.

The trooper headed south and activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to catch up to the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, Justin Aspuria, 28, of Colorado Springs, attempted to exit the highway at Northgate Boulevard but failed to negotiate a curve, leaving the road and crashing into a road sign, the state patrol said.

The trooper rendered assistance until medical personnel arrived.

Aspuria was taken to Penrose Hospital where he died, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Aspuria was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
