China is lifting one of its most grotesque invasions of human rights in recent decades: the one-child policy, which resulted in forced abortions, female infanticide and other horrors.

Not that the Communist Party has seen the light in terms of freedom. This was a reform brought about by necessity, namely China’s aging population and the relative dearth of children to sustain the future economy.

Couples will now be allowed to have two children — which is still an unthinkable restriction in other societies. But the new policy will at least accommodate the desires of a large majority of Chinese parents who long for more than one.
