After a two-month closure because of increased bear activity, Waterton Canyon in Douglas County will reopen to hikers and cyclists Friday.
“We’ve been monitoring the bear activity along the trail on a daily basis, and it’s finally at a level we are used to seeing in the canyon this time of year,” Brandon Ransom, Denver Water’s manager of recreation, said in a statement Thursday.
The agency after a . Denver Water said at the time that a temporary closure of Waterton Canyon would reduce the chances for human-bear encounters.
Officials are warning that despite the reopening, bears remain active in the canyon and visitors should keep their distance.
