Dozens of bruises, cuts and burns covered 23-month-old Jayvion Johnson’s body.

Jayvion’s mother, Candice Lampley, and her boyfriend, Delonta Crank, appeared in Denver District Court for the first portion of a preliminary hearing. Both have been charged with in Jayvion’s death.

Denver police Detective Troy Bisgard described how the toddler was “not breathing and cold to the touch” when he was brought to a hospital July 8. Bisgard interviewed Crank and Lampley after Jayvion was pronounced dead.

Both acknowledge that Jayvion had an accident in the bathroom of the apartment the two shared with Jayvion’s three older siblings. Feces were smeared on the bathroom floor, and Jayvion needed to take a bath, Bisgard said.

She said Crank told her that Jayvion had an accident and he “had to give him a whoopin.'”

Crank told Bisgard that Lampley gave Jayvion a bath. Bisgard’s investigation later revealed that Lampley was at work all day July 7 — the day before Jayvion was taken to the hospital.

A neighbor told police that in the early hours of July 8, he heard a man yelling at a woman to “just do it,” Bisgard said. The neighbor also reported hearing a baby screaming.

Lampley told Bisgard that she was primarily responsible for disciplining her four children. She admitted hitting her children with a closed fist or using a belt. She said she also suspected other family members who cared for her children hit them as well.
