Smoke from a controlled burn at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge may be visible Friday afternoon for several miles.

The burn was scheduled to be conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. People in the area may smell smoke, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported. The wildlife service sent a tweet just before 1 p.m. to announce the fires had been ignited.

The wildlife service planned to burn up to 671 acres. Prescribed burns are designed to reinvigorate prairie vegetation growth, reduce litter, manage weeds and improve wildlife habitat, the wildlife service said on its website.

The wildlife service burned 209 acres on Oct. 8.

Fire crews from local agencies and workers from other federal agencies are helping with the burn.
