COLORADO CITY, Colo. (AP) — The Sangre de Cristo Volunteers for Community have negotiated a 30-year, $1-a-year lease with the Colorado City Metropolitan District on a community activity center in the middle of an abandoned 9-hole golf course.

The group wants to build a trail and offer cooking classes, health fairs and projects for children.

Organizers say the golf course has been abandoned because of lack of water and it could be put to better use.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports (http://tinyurl.com/p8pk7nt ) the group hopes to get grants and donations to finish the project.

Partners include the metro board, Pueblo County School District 70, Colorado City Parks and Recreation and other government agencies.
