A Colorado Springs woman is recovering after being bitten by a shark in Florida on Sunday afternoon.

Jill Kruse, 28, was attacked in Cocoa Beach about 2:30 p.m., according to officials and her mother.

Kruse was bitten on her leg along a portion of the coast not manned by lifeguards, said Chief Jeff Scabarozi of Brevard County Fire Rescue Ocean Services. “It was a significant bite,” Scabarozi said.

Kruse’s mother, Wanda Kruse, said her daughter arrived in Florida on Saturday for a family vacation.

“We were in the water for about 10 minutes and that’s when it happened,” Wanda Kruse told The Denver Post on Monday. “I just jumped into action.”

Wanda Kruse says her daughter is recovering at a hospital and that she has a “long road ahead of her.”

The attack is the second time this year a Colorado Springs resident has been attacked by a shark.
