Spotlight on… Max Domi, left wing, Arizona Coyotes
When: The Avalanche plays at Arizona on Thursday, following Colorado’s two-game homestand that begins Sunday against San Jose and concludes Tuesday against Calgary.
What’s up: Domi, 20, entered Friday’s game against Vancouver tied for first in Coyotes scoring with 10 points (four goals). He and fellow up-and-coming Arizona star Anthony Duclair (seven points, five goals) are products of the 2013 NHL draft and making the rebuilding Coyotes relevant this season.
Background: Domi is the son of former NHL forward Tie Domi, a 5-foot-10 tough guy and one of the most interesting players of his time. Tie was often dubbed a heavyweight enforcer, but his 205-pound frame made that impossible. He simply was unafraid of anyone in the NHL, and his 3,515 penalty minutes included fights with some of the league’s legendary enforcers. He is third in all-time penalty minutes, behind Tiger Williams (3,966) and Dale Hunter (3,563). Max Domi is 5-10 and thinner, but his game is offense and scoring goals.
Chambers’ take: I love this father-son comparison because the dad, who produced just 104 career NHL goals, is undoubtedly proud that his son is destined to score more goals and not come remotely close to his career penalty minutes. The game has changed and Max Domi has the potential to become like the skilled scorers whom his father eagerly stood up for, no matter the danger.
