For 250 Colorado drivers, trick-or-treat weekend came with a DUI ticket.
The Colorado Department of Transportation reported Thursday that heightened patrols, sobriety checkpoints and other enforcement efforts contributed to the number of impaired driving arrests from Oct. 30 through Nov. 2.
That was down, however, from Halloween 2014, when 329 drivers were arrested on DUI charges.
“We’re pleased that DUI arrests were down this past Halloween,” said Darrell Lingk, director of CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety, “but there is still a lot of work to be done to reverse the trend of drug and alcohol-related fatalities in Colorado.”
The state patrol and three police departments — Denver, Aurora and Colorado Springs — accounted for a majority of the arrests.
Halloween weekend DUI enforcement is part of the transportation department’s “The Heat is On” campaign, which is centered on national holidays and large public events.
