Denver city officials have found a location for a long-sought new motor vehicle branch for the southeast part of the city.
A City Council committee advanced a lease to the full council Tuesday morning for a space in a shopping center at 2223 S. Monaco Parkway, between Evans and Iliff avenues. The council could approve the lease as soon as Nov. 30.
The 10-year, $1.2 million lease with CA New Plan Villa Monaco L.P. is for a storefront in the same shopping center as a Walmart Neighborhood Market.
After then-Councilwoman Peggy Lehmann lobbied for a Department of Motor Vehicles branch in District 4 during last year’s budget process, Mayor Michael Hancock agreed to seek state approval. A southeast DMV branch on East Dartmouth Avenue was closed in 2007, but residents have complained about the distance from that part of the city to the four remaining branches.
The new branch is expected to open next summer.
“I’m proud we are one step closer to restoring this key city function in Southeast Denver,” Hancock said in a news release.
