A Denver Public Schools program that monitors student e-mail accounts triggered a brief lockdown at Skinner Middle School Tuesday morning.

The district’s information technology department flagged a three-word note from one student to another: “Don’t forget gun.”

Will Jones, spokesman for DPS, said the e-mail led to a police response and subsequent lockdown of Skinner that lasted roughly 20 minutes.

Police searched the two students’ backpacks and lockers and concluded the fears were unfounded.

Jones said the students were talking about a Lego gun.

Officials says they monitor students’ Gmail accounts that are provided by the district.

“There are certain words, such as ‘gun,’ that trigger an immediate reaction,” Jones said.
