Colorado has named Democratic Reps. Beth McCann and Rhonda Fields its legislators of the year for their work in the statehouse to make Colorado’s roads safer places to be and ensuring victims’ rights are considered.
McCann, of Denver, sponsored successful legislation a felony in Colorado, carrying a sentence of two to six years in prison. Colorado judges also can now order ignition interlocks for up to five years after a second conviction.
‘s other primary sponsors were was Rep. Lori Saine, R-Dacono, as well as Sens. Mike Johnston, D-Denver, and John Cooke, R-Greeley. The legislation (Rep. Justin Everett, R-Littleton, voted against it) and (Sen. Owen Hill, R-Colorado Springs, was the lone opponent).
According to the House Democratic Press Office, Colorado became the 46th state to pass a felony DUI law.
“Colorado’s felony DUI law will be putting habitual offenders behind bars, where they can’t pose a threat to other motorists,” McCann said in a statement. “We are already saving lives and making our roads safer for everyone.”
Fields, of Aurora, co-chaired the Victims’ Rights Caucus with Rep. Polly Lawrence, R-Roxborough Park. The group of legislators sought a balance in policies between the rights of victims and those accused in the criminal justice system.
“Many of the victims we’re standing up for are those killed and injured by intoxicated drivers,” Fields stated.
Fields was honored by MADD for the third straight year.
