Re: “At long last, relief from No Child Left Behind,” Nov. 21 editorial.
With a single word, The Post revealed why No Child Left Behind failed and always will fail. The last line of your editorial says the revised act will continue to “push” children to learn. Not lead, not aid, not motivate. The purpose of the legislation has been and remains to push and force learning.
As a one-time psychology professor, I assure you abundant evidence shows children cannot be forced to learn beyond their ability and willingness. Government can do little to increase ability, but if a fraction of the fortune squandered on feckless education bureaucrats had been used to reward children for trying harder, real education gains could have been achieved.
