Windsor junior Corte Tapia’s first touchdown in his preps career was a big one.
The Wizards’ star linebacker grabbed a fumble recovery in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter to give No. 3-seed Windsor a 12-6 lead over No. 2 Longmont. It was all Windsor would need as the Wizards punched a ticket to their first state title game since 2011.
“(Defensive lineman) Storm (Fox) made a great play to get the ball out and I just happened to be in the right spot to jump on it,” Tapia said in a phone interview after the game.
The stingy Windsor defense — which has allowed a 4A-low 85 points all season — held the high-powered Longmont offense to just 224 yards of total offense.
Windsor will face No. 13 Loveland, which pulled off a 26-14 upset over No. 1 Pine Creek, in the 4A title game next Saturday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
“I’m a little sore, but it’s a great feeling knowing that we have another week together and we’re going to the championship game,” Tapia said.
The 16-year-old is getting looks from a handful of Division I schools, including Colorado, Colorado State, Nebraska and Wyoming.
