A 36-year-old Calhan woman was killed Wednesday afternoon and her teen passenger injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash east of Colorado Springs.

Mary Layman was ejected in the wreck and pronounced dead at the scene near the intersection of Log and JD Johnson roads.

The Colorado State Patrol said the crash happened about 2:15 p.m. when a 1997 Honda Passport SUV driven by Layman was heading southbound when she lost control.

The State Patrol said the SUV began rotating clockwise, at which point Layman steered to the left, causing the vehicle to leave the road and overturn.

Layman was not wearing her seat belt.

Layman’s 18-year-old passenger also was not wearing his seat belt, but he was not ejected and suffered only minor injuries.

Drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
