A storm system already dropping snow in the northern Colorado mountains will hit the metro area late Friday night and snow is expected Saturday morning, forecasters say.

There’s a 30 percent chance of snow starting mainly after 4 a.m., in Denver, according to the National Weather Service.

Skies are cloudy over Denver and the low temperature Saturday morning should be about 27 degrees. Early morning snow in Denver Saturday should be less than an inch, but the weather system will intensify, with an 80 percent chance of snow in Denver during the day and up to 3 additional inches possible.

The chance of snow should stick around Denver Saturday until about 9 p.m., when clouds will gradually start clearing out. The overnight low Saturday night into Sunday will be around 19 degrees. There’s a 60 percent chance of snow in Denver with about an inch of new snow possible Sunday morning.

As the day progresses Sunday, skies over the city should become sunny as the high temperature climbs to about 44 degrees, the weather service reports.

In the mountains, weekend snow totals should range between 6 and 18 inches, with the heavier amounts north of Interstate 70, the weather service said.

A new weather system should move into northeastern Colorado on Monday, bringing another chance for snow in the mountains Tuesday night, and a slight chance of mountain snow on Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures should be below seasonal norms next week in northeastern Colorado.
