Authorities in southwestern Colorado said Friday they have ended their active search for a 37-year-old snowmobiler — an Air Force veteran — last heard from Sunday.

The Dolores County Sheriff’s Office now considers efforts to find Ronald Wallace Jr. a “recovery” mission. Officials say they found an abandoned snowmobile in Groundhog Reservoir late Thursday and are now searching for a body.

Wallace was last known to be riding around the town of Groundhog, where he is from.

“Wallace was last heard from on Sunday afternoon, via telephone, when he called a friend during a short break from a snowmobile ride he was enjoying,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
