BRECKENRIDGE — Breckenridge police officers arrested a 23-year-old Fort Collins man on Saturday after his dog reportedly mauled a six-year-old girl. Police received a report of the incident around 4:38 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, after Alec Peyton left the scene where his dog allegedly attacked the girl near the valet station at the Village at Breckenridge.

Peyton faces one class-three felony count of child abuse and two misdemeanor counts, including reckless endangerment and unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog. Peyton could face up to 12 years in prison.

After a parent asked if the girl could pet the dog, reports note the owner consented before the girl was bitten in the face. The girl was hospitalized for her injuries.

“They were pretty serious injuries,” Breckenridge assistant police chief Dennis McLaughlin said. “He was arrested on our warrant, and the dog is being quarantined.”
