WASHINGTON — The holiday season is all about tradition — such as the annual fight over what Christmas decorations should be shown in public spaces.
In homage to that ritual, U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, recently that looked to express the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected for use by those who celebrate Christmas.
About three dozen House lawmakers so far have joined in supporting the resolution. Among them: U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Cortez.
In terms of legislative power, resolutions carry little weight. They don t require the signature of the president and – if approved – don t enjoy the force of law. Even so, this resolution likely will have a hard time of passage given the short time left in the calendar year and the constitutional debate it almost would certainly trigger in the House.
Still, Lamborn promoted the resolution in a statement issued Tuesday.
Regrettably, there has been a troubling effort by some in America to ban any and all Christmas celebrations and traditions from the public arena. These attacks on Christmas clearly violate the rights of religious expression our Founding Fathers deliberately provided for us in the Constitution.
