Re: “Assault weapons are not necessary,” Dec. 15 letter to the editor.

It is clear that letter-writer David Beers and many others do not understand what they are talking about when discussing “assault weapons.”

What is the definition of an “assault weapon”? One that looks like a military weapon? One that can hold a large magazine? One that is semi-automatic? Beers writes that only police (maybe) and military should have these weapons and that “smaller weapons” are adequate for personal and home protection. Semi-automatic weapons are used for hunting by many people. Magazines already have a limited capacity by Colorado law. And most weapons that look like “assault” weapons are .223 caliber, which is pretty small in the continuum of calibers.

To improve our gun violence issues, we do not need people making comments without understanding what they are talking about. We need to enforce the gun laws and sentencing laws that are already on the books.
