
A man who made racially-motivated threats and attempted to fight another man who was in an interracial relationship was sentenced Friday to nine months in jail and mental health treatment in Weld County.
Dominic Israel Preciado, 20, was sentenced for third degree assault in Weld County District Court for a bias-motivated fight that happened in August, according to a 19th Judicial District Attorney news release.
Preciado approached the victim and his wife in a Wal-Mart parking lot and began making racial slurs and threats and attempted to fight the victim, the release said.
The fight was caught on cellphone video.
The victim, a military veteran,chose not to fight back and used tactical training to restrain the defendant until Greeley police arrived on the scene, the release said.
Preciado was arrested for the incident and on two outstanding municipal warrants including a 2014 misdemeanor for resisting arrest and a 2012 charge for possession of drug paraphernalia.
Preciado was on probation at the time of the offense, the release said.
In addition to nine months of jail time, Preciado will have two years of probation and mental health assessments and treatment, the release said.
