A man appeared in Eagle County Court on Tuesday on charges of assault, false imprisonment and harassment for an alleged attack on his girlfriend in Vail that was thwarted by a good Samaritan who came to her rescue, officials said.

Paris Aguilera Baeza, 40, was tackled by British citizen Jason Blick in Vail’s Sebastian hotel hallway after Blick tried to stop Baeza from hitting his girlfriend, according to a Fifth Judicial District of Colorado news release.

After being tackled, Baeza, a Mexican national, recovered enough to put Blick in a chokehold until he lost consciousness, the release said.

Baeza and his girlfriend then fled to a hotel room where Vail police found Baeza a short time hiding under the bed sheets, police said.

“Jason Blick’s heroic intervention likely saved a woman from serious harm,” said District Attorney Bruce Brown. “We are grateful for his selflessness and relieved that he is on the road to recovery from his injuries.”

Eagle County Judge Katharine Taylor Sullivan ordered Baeza to be held on a $500,000 bond and to surrender his Republic of Mexico passport.

Baeza’s next court appearance is for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 19.
