Steamboat Springs and other mountain ski resorts could get anywhere from 18 inches to 2 feet of new snow by Thursday, forecasters say.

A winter storm advisory was issued for the Colorado high country Tuesday. Snow will be fairly continuous through the week, said Kyle Fredin, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boulder.

A chance of rain and snow is possible before 8 p.m. Tuesday and then snow is likely in the Denver Metro area, the weather service said.

About an inch of snow could accumulate overnight.

There is a 30 percent chance of snow for Wednesday, mostly after 2 p.m., the weather service said. New snow accumulation should be less than a half inch, forecasters said.

Christmas Eve looks mostly sunny during the day with no precipitation in sight.

There is a 20 percent chance of snow on Christmas evening.

Snow flurries may not make this an official “white Christmas” in the metro area, Fredin said.

Technically, it’s a white Christmas if a trace of new snow falls or a half-inch of previously fallen snow remains on the ground, according to Fredin.

Temperatures will rise to the mid- to high-40s on Tuesday. The high on Wednesday is expected to be in the mid-30s.

The low temperatures will be from the 21 to 27 degrees Tuesday, 13 to 17 degrees Wednesday and 14 to 20 degrees on Thursday, Fredin said.
