Re: “Attitudes toward Muslim-Americans after San Bernardino,” Dec. 21 letter to the editor.
While I consider myself reasonably live-and-let-live in personal philosophy, I must applaud letter-writer Edwin R. Anderson, who wonders: Where is the mass moderate Muslim voice condemning the inhumane actions of their (statistically) few renegades? There appears to be little effort to stamp out Islamic radicalism by the very group being slandered. You wouldn’t think that one of the world’s oldest and most prolific religions would tolerate the terrible image being placed upon it by bands of intolerant radicals. That silence is worrisome, especially when reading the comments of letter-writer Herb Giefer, in the same issue, where he points out the lack of assimilation into Western cultures that has been practiced by many Muslim immigrants in other countries.

This letter was published in the Dec. 26 edition.Letter-writer Edwin R. Anderson notes that few Muslims speak up to decry abuse of their religion, in contrast to the expected huge outcry if there were Catholic terrorist attacks. Unfortunately, the contrast is not nearly so sharp. Christian terrorists regularly kill people with minimal response from their everyday co-religionists. One of the latest such cases was only last month in Colorado when three people were killed at a Planned Parenthood clinic. Where was the outcry? The lack of outrage is deplorable, but is not limited to Islamic groups.

This letter was published in the Dec. 26 edition. In rationalizing Islamophobia, letter-writer Edwin R. Anderson wonders “what would happen if a group of Catholics started terrorist attacks and claimed it was based on God and their religion.” We don’t need to wonder. We just need to remember the Crusades.
