The NBA is collaborating with Everytown for Gun Safety and is making public service announcements regarding gun violence. While the league is not calling for the implementation of gun safety measures, it is bringing attention to the issue of gun violence in our country. I applaud this risky and courageous move by the league.
The NBA has a history of promoting social issues. Former Commissioner David Stern was a champion of gay rights, and NBA owner Abe Pollin changed the name of the Washington franchise from the Bullets to the Wizards. In Arizona, the Phoenix Suns franchise spoke out against Senate Bill 1070, which was widely viewed as an oppressive immigration policy. The team was criticized and even received threatening letters.
Wouldn’t it be refreshing if our political leaders and other entities would display such courage rather than cowering to the influence of special-interest groups such as the NRA?
