An ice climber who died Wednesday after a fall near Redstone has been identified as a 42-year-old Carbondale man.

The Pitkin County Coroner’s Office said Ryan Jennings’ death was an accident, although the exact cause was still being investigated.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said in an earlier news release that the climber was reported missing about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When emergency personnel arrived at the popular climbing area about 17 miles south of Carbondale, they were told a friend of the climber had hiked into the backcountry to look for him.

The friend discovered that an ice pillar broke, causing the climber to fall from an unknown height.

The climber was dead when crews arrived.
