As many of its patrons know, Andre’s Confiserie Suisse in Cherry Creek opened its doors for the last time on New Year’s Day. Hundreds lined up for lunch each day as word spread of its closing, and 9News paid tribute to the owner and the quality of Andre’s pastries and lunches.

As a patron of Andre’s for 49 years, I can echo one customer’s comment that there is no other restaurant and bakery like Andre’s in Colorado.

A comment from owner Bruno Gegenschatz cut to the quick of this whole sad affair: He could no longer afford the hike in property taxes. “The city basically doesn’t want us here anymore. We got priced out.”

Unfortunately, I’m sure his comment rings true with many other small business owners whose property is coveted as a piece of land for yet another traffic-congesting, view-blocking high-rise building.

Gegenschatz will have a well-deserved retirement, and those of us who cherished his unique restaurant will watch the small building and parking lot be erased and replaced.
