President Obama wipes away tears from his eyes as he speaks in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Jan. 5, about steps his administration is taking to reduce gun violence. Also on stage are stakeholders, and individuals whose lives have been impacted by the gun violence. (Carolyn Kaster, The Associated Press)
Re: “’It gets me mad’ – Obama acts alone on gun control,” Jan. 6 news story.
As President Obama became teary-eyed while talking about the 33,000 deaths in the U.S. every year due to gun violence, I thought about the 88,000 annual deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control, that are directly due to irresponsible use of alcohol.
Whether it is gun violence or drunken driving, many families have nowhere to turn for help when their family member is in need of mental health intervention. We need affordable mental health options for both of these issues.
Guns kill innocent people. Alcohol kills many more.
