A search is underway in northwestern Colorado Thursday night for a single-engine Beachcraft Bonanza airplane after witnesses reported hearing an engine revving shortly before an explosion.

The explosion was reported around 6 p.m. about 15 miles west of Meeker, according to Undersheriff Brice Glasscock of the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office.

A witness called the sheriff’s office and reported that “he heard a plane rev its engines, banked twice and then heard an explosion,” Glasscock said.

A sheriff’s dispatcher called Denver Center Traffic Control and learned that an aircraft was lost off of radar.

Sheriff’s deputies and members of Rio Blanco County Search and Rescue are searching for the crash site.
